Six Rounds, Five Apps and No Participation Trophies

Short-drama apps stopped being a fringe curiosity some time ago. In Q1 2025, the US produced 49% of the about $700M in global in-app revenue that Sensor Tower counted for the category. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had reached about $750M, and full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Five names lead the conversation, namely ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave, and anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has come across at least one of them. On the surface, the apps look identical, reelshorts.org/where-to-watch/fate-s-trap with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Below the surface, however, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and those differences affect what you pay and where you can watch. Over six rounds, we named a winner each time, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Comparison Grid

Ahead of the rounds, take a look at the entire field on a single screen. The prices reflect the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. The install figures are taken from each app’s Google Play listing. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. If a cell says «not reported», no reliable source made public the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. See the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Ownership and Scale

As the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. According to MPA, its 2025 revenue reached $785M, with $1.05B expected for 2026. Singapore’s StoryMatrix operates DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as «dreamwave», is the youngest app here, yet it already commands about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly exceeded $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. The only app with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder is My Drama, even though it is the minnow with 5M+ Android installs. For context, GoodShort has about 6% and sits just outside this lineup. Winner: ReelShort, by a narrow margin, on market share.

Round 2: Pricing

The apps look most alike in this round. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all offer an auto-renewing weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store. DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99, and ShortMax also lists a $9.99 «Weekly Pass Pro». DramaBox takes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. Among these US listings, the only verified monthly plan is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, which makes it the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, which makes a monthly plan at less than half that the better buy for steady watchers. Winner: DramaWave, as its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals comfortably. Prices change by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may be different.

Round 3: Watching for Free

The marketing gets loud and the details get thin when it comes to free viewing. ReelShort’s own blog states that one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes and that the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free. Keep a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Looking for the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying? ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and «unlimited coins» generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so stay away from them. DramaBox also offers free options, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Winner: ReelShort, and clearly so.

Round 4: Screens and Platforms

On screens, these apps genuinely diverge. Besides iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. As for DramaBox, the website mostly sends you back to the app, while DramaWave is verified only on its iOS and Android apps. Since its domain points to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show an Apple TV app, but My Drama has one for tvOS 18 or later, and that is its trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Round winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama wins the living room.

Round 5: Library and Originals

No rival matches ShortMax on raw numbers. As of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations, and the app now claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. According to reports, more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. For its part, DramaBox offers an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama boasts the most interesting pipeline, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, by sheer volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print

DramaWave runs away with this one. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video are promised in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync ranks as the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. Cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. According to ShortMax’s terms, refunds are not given «unless the paid product/service is unusable», and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave, comfortably.

Best For: Our Final Picks

The best choice depends on how you watch, because no single short drama app takes every round. For web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. As the one app here with a verified tvOS version, and the only one with Fox-produced originals, My Drama is best for Apple TV. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. When it comes to commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. Ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader. ReelShort is again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. If you are tempted by all five, choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
